About Compendia

Compendia publishes long-form explainers on science and technology, history, money, health and the natural world. The goal is narrow: when you have a real question, the article should answer it properly rather than restate the question at greater length.

Who writes it

Articles are written and edited by a small editorial team. Each piece carries the name of the person who wrote it and the date it was last reviewed. Where an author has relevant professional background, it is stated on the article.

How articles are researched

Every article begins with primary sources — peer-reviewed papers, official statistics, original documents, technical specifications — rather than with other articles on the same subject. Where a claim is contested or the evidence is weak, we say so in the text instead of picking the more interesting side.

We avoid three things that are common in this format: presenting a single study as settled science, quoting a statistic without its denominator, and implying precision the underlying data does not support.

Review and corrections

Articles are reviewed by a second person before publication, checking for factual accuracy, unstated assumptions and misleading framing. After publication, substantive errors are corrected in place and the change is noted rather than made silently. If you believe something here is wrong, please tell us — corrections are welcome and taken seriously.

How this site is funded

Compendia is free to read and supported by advertising. Ads are served by Google AdSense and are clearly separated from editorial content. Some articles contain affiliate links, which are disclosed where they appear.

Advertisers have no input into what we cover or what we conclude. No article is written, altered or withdrawn at an advertiser's request. If a piece recommends a product, it is because it is the better recommendation, not because of a commercial relationship.
